Great pillows do for a space what striking accessories do for a wardrobe: They transform the lackluster into a combination that oozes with personality and style without the need for an overhaul.
The eight sustainably-designed pillows here, popping with vibrant patterns and colorful fabrics, will uplift both your space and your mood.
These one-off pillow covers boast colorful patterns and adorable animals like the cute giraffe pictured (a peacock, goldfish, and prairie dog are also available).
The organic cotton fabric is hand-painted individually using non-toxic paints and each pillow boasts a unique, one-of-a-kind design. Find them for $120 each at the nagisawada shop on Etsy.
We might be biased, but you can’t go wrong with a handmade, 100 percent cotton tribute to the bike (also available in green velvet).
The white pillow (insert not included) boasts a vintage bike graphic design that is hand screen printed with eco-friendly ink. Find it at Zen Threads in Etsy for $24.
Inspired by her travels up the west coast of the U.S., designer Helen Peterson created a print called, “On The Boardwalk.” The yellow and blue screen-printed pillow covers (also available in navy and gray) are made with eco-friendly inks, hemp fabric and organic cotton.

Designed by Andrea Bernstein, this striking collection of pillows adorned with bold, vibrant prints are made with 100% cotton and filled with 95% feather and 5% down filling. They are hand-printed individually with water-based inks, except the metallic linen pillows, which are 100% linen, and are all made entirely in Southern California.
These plump pillows ($58 – $78) can be found in store at Millworks shop-in-shop at HD Buttercup, a design emporium founded by former ABC Carpet Home CEO, Evan Cole, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

Charleston, South Carolina-based textile design company Proud Mary turns hand woven Guatemalan textiles into gorgeous home and fashion accessories. The 100% cotton pillows, which come with a feather and down insert, are woven by artisans in three weaving cooperatives in Guatemala and are sewn in two workshops in the region.
“We incorporated brightly colored pom-poms and tassels used in traditional Mayan dress, into each product showcasing the colors of Guatemala,” says Harper Poe, founder of Proud Mary. Find them online at Proud Mary Shop; prices range from $96 to $160.

West Elm gives vintage, 100% cotton saris a second life with their collection of Kantha Quilted Pillows. Each recycled pillow is hand quilted and made in India by female artisans.
From soft, neutral colors to bold, attractive prints, the one-of-a-kind pillows are both stylish and functional. At $19 for the 12″ x 8″ pillow and $24 for the 16″ pillow at West Elm, they boast a reasonable price point. The down side: each pillow comes with a polyester insert, but thanks to a button enclosure this can easily be replaced.
ABC Carpet Home is a one stop shop for sustainable luxury and so it’s no big surprise that they boast a luscious assortment of decorative pillows.
Stand outs include the Elmas Pillows, which feature hand screen-printed, 70s- and retro-inspired designs on cotton ($44 on sale at ABC Carpet Home).
Also notable are the block printed pillows: this ancient art form employs hand-carved blocks to leave an impression on cruelty-free raw silk. The artisan-made pillows get their color from vegetable dyes and they can be found at ABC Carpet Home (currently on sale for $20).
You can buy plenty of pillows new but there are also a bevy of vintage pillows available on Etsy. Since they’re vintage and usually one-of-a-kind, you’ll have to act quick if you want to take the pillows home.
Like with this striking duo designed by legendary textile designer Jack Lenor Larson that boasts vibrant cotton velvet with piping trim and is in great condition. Snag them for $15 on Etsy.
