A Melbourne tram driver who was caught on video reading an electronics catalogue while in control of a moving tram could be disciplined.
Commuter Rod Swift, who uploaded the video to YouTube yesterday, told the Herald Sun the driver continued to read for at least two minutes while driving the 109 tram along Whitehorse Rd.
“I felt unsafe in that tram — I thought the situation was dangerous,” Mr Swift said.
“It got more disturbing as he rejoined traffic.”
He said he did not approach the driver because he did not want to distract him further and got off the tram.
A Yarra Trams spokesman said the driver would be interviewed and dealt with according to the company’s disciplinary processes.
Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said tram drivers reading did not seem to be a widespread problem in Melbourne but the incident should be investigated and appropriate action taken.
