Train fall: ‘Miracle’ on the Sunlander

Tasty travel ... the Sunlander train.

Queensland Rail has launched an investigation into how a five-year-old child could fall unnoticed from a moving train.

The boy’s survival has been described as “utterly remarkable” and a “Christmas miracle”.

The mother of the young boy, who was travelling with three other children, raised the alarm about 7pm yesterday after she failed to find him on the Sunlander.

Staff on the train reportedly discovered an open door and called police.

The child was reportedly relatively unharmed when he was found two hours later by a motorist.

The boy is believed to have suffered only minor injuries and was taken to the Cairns Base Hospital for treatment.

The Sunlander train was on a northbound run between Deeral and Aloomba, in far north Queensland, when the alarm was raised.

Police have referred questions to QR.

A QR spokeswoman said senior officials had travelled to Cairns this morning to continue the investigation.

QR has confirmed the child fell on a low speed section of the track and the Sunlander carriage in question has been withdrawn from service.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk told 612 ABC that she had ordered a full inquiry into the incident.

Calling the boy’s survival “a Christmas miracle” Ms Palaszczuk said she ordered her department to find out what had happened to ensure it never occurred again.

Acting Premier Andrew Fraser said he had been led to believe the child slipped through a door linking carriages but would wait for the investigations to draw to a close before passing judgement.

He said the priority was the child’s welfare and that QR’s trains and safety facilities remained up to standard.

“Five-year-olds will be five-year-olds and we need to make sure things are safe,” he said, calling the child’s survival “utterly remarkable”.

The government announced last year plans to retire the Sunlander after 45 years of service and replace it with new tilt trains under construction in Maryborough.
