The family of three people killed in a highway smash south of Sydney on Tuesday has revealed they were returning from their first visit to meet a newborn addition to the family.

Calvyn Logan, 59, and his 81-year-old parents Patricia and Donald Logan, died on Tuesday morning when a B-double truck carrying bricks travelling south on the Hume Highway crossed lanes and crushed their car at the Menangle Bridge.

Robert Logan today made an appeal for witnesses to the crash, which killed his father and grandparents as they returned from visiting their prematurely-born great granddaughter Olivia in Canberra.

His uncle Garry Logan explained that Olivia had a precarious entry into the world.

“She was born on Boxing Day – 1.5 kilos. She’d just been taken home two kilos last week. My mother held her for two or three hours,” he said.

Garry Logan was anxiously awaiting a visit from his brother and parents yesterday in western Sydney.

He finally recognised the car from a picture on a media website, and police confirmed it was his family last night.

“No-one would want to experience that,” he said.

After the family spoke today, acting Police Superintendent Phillip Brooks ruled out media speculation that an 18-year-old learner driver was a factor in the truck veering across the highway yesterday.

The 33-year-old truck driver suffered minor injuries. He has been tested for drugs and alcohol and questioned by police.

Robert Logan appealed for anyone with further details about the accident to contact police.

“Everyone would like to understand why… it is such a shock and you don’t even know where to start,” he said.
