A Smaller, More Affordable Hybrid
Toyota is branching out its Prius lineup in both directions. The Prius V is bigger, the Prius C is smaller, but if you want even smaller and cheaper, you’ll have to wait for the Yaris hybrid. More details about it were revealed in Geneva, including (finally) fuel economy numbers (though based on the European tests).

Here are the highlights:
– Yaris brings full hybrid technology to the European B-segment for the first time, offering a unique driving and ownership experience
– Combines Yaris design with hybrid cues to offer distinctive and refined styling
– Breakthrough in hybrid packaging maintains identical occupant space and luggage capacity to standard model range
– Segment leading CO2 emissions of just 79 g/km from downsized full hybrid powertrain, and fuel consumption of 3.5 l/100 km
– Representing 20% of all Yaris model range sales, on sale throughout Europe from May 2012
3.5 liters per 100 kilometers is equivalent to 67 miles per gallon (MPG) US. Of course, that’s not directly comparable to a EPA MPG figure, but it gives an idea of just how fuel-efficient the Yaris hybrid will be.
Part of the fuel savings will come from aerodynamic tweaks. The Yaris hybrid has a drag coefficient of 0.286, which is pretty good, though not as good as the Prius’ 0.25 Cd.
We still don’t know how Toyota will price the Yaris hybrid, though, but it’ll probably be lower than the Prius C, which will be priced around 19k in the US.
