The National Weather Service warns that the southeastern United States may see severe weather again on Wednesday.
The weather could bring heavy rain, damaging winds and tornadoes, experts say.
Some 37 million people are at risk in places like Jacksonville, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Virginia Beach; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Atlanta, CNN reports, citing the service.
Officials in Escambia County, Florida, issued a state of emergency after 9 inches of rain and asked drivers to stay off the roads for the next 24 hours. County schools will be closed Wednesday.
Forecasters say there are some storm risks, including the possibility of large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding in portions of the South and East Coast.
Late Monday, tornadoes hit the South affecting tens of thousands of people who were left without power.
According to CNN, 17 deaths were confirmed in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee on Monday. Those deaths are in addition to 18 others reported in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa from storms Sunday.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the storm that struck Mississippi and Alabama was making its way through parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
