Torbay says Labor man’s claims false

NSW independent MP and Nationals hopeful Richard Torbay has hit back at claims tried to become Labor premier in 2009, saying the party was trying to hurt his reputation.

Labor’s general-secretary, Sam Dastyari has claimed that on the eve of former premier Nathan Rees being dumped in favour of Kristina Keneally, Mr Torbay called him into his office.

Mr Dastyari claims that the 51-year-old, who was parliamentary speaker at the time, pulled out $200 from his wallet and said he would join the party if he was given the job of premier, Fairfax newspapers reported on Sunday.

But Mr Torbay has fervently denied the claims.

“Sam Dastyari is lying,” Mr Torbay told Fairfax.

“I was approached to become premier, which has been previously reported. The approach was led by John Della Bosca. We discussed it but I made it clear I could not join the party.”

Mr Torbay announced last week he would be seeking the National Party’s endorsement for the federal seat of New England.

Mr Torbay, who served as parliamentary speaker under the former NSW Labor government, was criticised by NSW Labor leader John Robertson on Friday for seeking Nationals preselection.

“The interesting thing is that he is going to join the National Party, he’s going to run as a National Party candidate, and pretend he’s sitting here still as an independent,” Mr Robertson told reporters in Sydney.

Mr Windsor, a former state independent who has held New England since 2001, declined to comment on the prospect of facing a challenge from Mr Torbay.

The Nationals NSW director Ben Franklin said Mr Torbay, a former mayor of Armidale, would not necessarily win party preselection for the federal seat, which overlaps his state seat of Northern Tablelands.
