The Nationals are expected to announce on Friday that popular NSW state independent MP Richard Torbay will take on Tony Windsor at the next federal election.
Mr Torbay is expected to announce his decision to join the Nationals to contest preselection for New England, in a joint appearance alongside Nationals leader Warren Truss in Armidale on Friday, The Australian reports.
Mr Windsor easily won New England at the 2010 election, but he’s now seen as being vulnerable in the traditionally conservative seat following his support for the minority Gillard Labor government.
Mr Torbay will join the Nationals once the preselection is announced, but will continue to sit as an independent in the NSW parliament until writs are issued for the federal election, The Australian said.
