‘Toppling Assad plot to weaken Iran’

“These [Persian] Gulf countries would like the Sunnis to take power and establish a religious state just like in the Persian Gulf, and weaken the Shias, who have been ruling Syria, as well as Iran, which is currently regarded as Syria’s ally.” Chairman of the Russian Duma’s International Affairs Committee Aleksey Pushkov said in an interview with Russia Today on July 10.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain treat Iran with much animosity and see a toppled Assad as a way to weaken the Shia-Iran,” Pushkov added.

Referring to the government crackdown on popular protest in Bahrain, Pushkov said the US has ignored the situation in the Persian Gulf country because unlike Syria, the kingdom is one of Washington’s allies and friends.

“The US in particular wants to topple the Assad regime, which has long been considered anti-American,” the Russian official added.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Meanwhile, in a press conference on Wednesday, Pushkov casted doubt on the nature of West’s stance against Iran’s nuclear program and said, “I highly doubt that it’s the Iranian nuclear program that the US and other Western countries are so preoccupied with, because Iran has already pinpointed it is not forwarding this program, an announcement none of these countries was able to prove wrong,” Interfax reported.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program and have used this pretext to push for four rounds of UN sanctions and a series of unilateral ones against the Islamic Republic.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use the nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
