The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a dog food recall on March 7. Steve’s Real Food has recalled five pound bags of Turducken Canine Recipe due to possible contamination of salmonella.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture – after routine sampling testing the five pound bags – discovered the potential for contamination.
The Murray, Utah-based pet food company has halted production of the eight-ounce patties while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of pathogen.
According to the FDA, “Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.”
Also, “Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and have these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
The affected canine diet products were distributed to retail stores in Conn., Mass., Maine, N.H., N.Y., Calif., Minn. and Tenn. from October 2012-January 2013.
The recalled dog foods will indicate lot number 209-10-27-13 with the expiration date of Oct. 27 on the affected five pound bags.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Steve’s Real Food Turducken Canine Recipe are urged to return them back to the place where they were purchased for a full refund.
No Illness have been reported as a result of this recall to date.
For further information or questions concerning this recall, contact the company at 801-540-8481, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. MST; they may also email the company at [email protected].
