Top tech headlines: Microsoft’s Windows Phone plans, iPad 3 rumors, app download records

Windows Phone roadmap is leaked
Leaked documents claiming to show Microsoft’s smartphone roadmap for the coming year revealed that the company plans to storm ahead with new versions of its Windows Phone software and powerful new Apollo “superphones.” According to the documents obtained by Windows-centric blog WMPoweruser.com, Microsoft’s 2012 strategy will include the release of a mobile operating system update called “Tango” which will introduce new consumers to the OS via “products with the best prices” and a following update called “Apollo” which is rumored to go hand-in-hand with superphones that sport dual-core processors, fast LTE connectivity, NFC and high resolution displays.

iOS Android apps Christmas download records

A record-breaking 242 million apps were downloaded worldwide on December 25, which analytics firm Flurry said is “more than double any other day in the history of iOS and Android devices, except December 24, which delivered roughly 150 million downloads.” According to Flurry’s estimates, iOS and Android app downloads started to surge after 7AM on Christmas Day around the globe as people started opening their presents. App downloads peaked between 7PM to 9PM and exceeded 15 million downloads per hour.

iPad 3 rumors

A DigiTimes report sparked new rumors about Apple’s next generation iPad, which, says the Taiwanese paper, will come in two versions and feature a 9.7” QXGA resolution (1,536×2,048 pixels) display. The rumored iPad 3 will also sport dual-LED light bars to increase the screen brightness, a 5MP or 8MP camera, a better battery, and quad-core A6 processors. DigiTimes reported the the tablet(s) would be announced at the iWorld (formally Macworld) conference in January. However, the prediction is not widely supported by other technology insiders.

Google+ grows to 62 million users

According to new estimates, Google’s social network Google+ (G+) is growing bigger every day, adding 625,000 new users to its total every 24 hours. The report by Ancestry.com founder and Google+ tracker Paul Allen said that the social network was on track to hit 400 million users by the end of 2012.

Rumored Windows Phone devices app market records

Paul Thurrott from SuperSite for Windows reported that “[t]hree LTE-based Windows Phone handsets — the Nokia ACE, HTC Radiant, and Samsung Mendel — will ship on ATT Wireless before the middle of 2012. The ACE is due March 18, 2012.” The handsets are rumored to feature in Microsoft’s final headlining keynote at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. During the week Windows blog All About Windows Phone announced that Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace had surpassed the 50,000 apps milestone, with new content being added to the store at a rate of 265 apps per day.
