Top ‘green’ events of 2012 to focus on renewable energy, smart grid, environmental awareness

Throughout 2012 cheaper, more efficient methods for generating renewable energy will once again be the focus of exhibitors and visitors at the world’s leading alternative energy trade shows such as Expo Solar (February) Solarexpo (May) and Solar Power International (September). The development of the smart grid and the integration of ‘intelligent’ energy-saving appliances will also be on the agenda at events such as the International Smart Grid Expo (February) and the Electronic House Expo (March).

Expo Solar is a business-to-business exhibition covering all aspects of solar energy — from the manufacture of cells to the capture and storage of energy.  In 2011 over 350 exhibitors from around the world showcased some of the latest cutting-edge solar technology to upwards of 50,000 visitors at Expo Solar and these figures are expected to increase in 2012. The exhibition is one of the largest dedicated renewable energy showcases of the year and, in terms of visitor numbers, overshadows Solar Power International held September 10-13 in the United States.

BioFach is the oldest and largest trade fair dedicated to organic products, and will this year extend from food products into holistic health and wellness through its partnership with the Vivaness event. In 2012 India will feature as the ‘country of the year’ and suppliers of organic produce from the country will travel en masse to BioFach in order to exhibit their produce. BiocFach is larger in scope and size than the other comparable European organic and natural ingredients trade fair, Food Ingredients Europe and Natural Ingredients Expo,  held at the end of November in France. The BioFach event has a global presence with events in Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Mumbai and Baltimore.

2nd International Smart Grid Expo

Held in conjunction with Japan Renewable Energy Week, the second annual International Smart Grid Expo is a global exhibition and conference covering a wide variety of technologies and services related to the Smart Grid. The event runs concurrent with the International Smart Grid Expo Technical conference and several other minor renewable energy technologies shows. Last year’s International Smart Grid Expo attracted over 90,000 visitors and over 1,500 exhibitors from 57 countries. The event is one of the few exhibitions and conferences dedicated solely to the Smart Grid, and is far larger than Distributech in the US which attracted 8,400 attendees in 2011 and next takes place January 24-26, 2012.

2nd San Francisco Green Film Festival

Following on from last year’s event, the second San Francisco Green Film Festival will include screenings of around 70 movies that explore environmental and sustainability issues from filmmakers around the world.  Last year’s event included contributions from renowned artists such as filmmaker Werner Herzog and writer Margaret Atwood. The event is similar to the UK Green Film Festival which also debuted last year and featured screenings of key environmental films such as The Age of Stupid and UK premieres of new works such as Planeat.

Electronic House Expo

EHX (Electronic House Expo) is an expo that caters for people interested in home health tech, smart energy, electronic security, digital media and custom electronics. It features booths from more than 200 exhibitors and offers hands-on sessions for those wanting to learn more about the electronics industry. In 2012 the New Opportunities Pavilion at EHX will be dedicated to numerous aspects of ‘connected living’ including ‘smart energy management‘, ‘home health tech and ‘remote diagnostics. Though the event is not used as a product launchpad in the same way the CES (January 10-13) is, for example, it nonetheless serves as an insight into the future of smart grid / home appliances technologies.

World Water Day

World Water Day began in 1992 following an United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janerio. Every year since its inception in 1992 countries around the world have been asked to devote the day to implementing UN recommendations regarding clean water supplies. In 2011 the event was held in March in Cape Town, South Africa where the World Water Day (WWD) Fair attracted around 1,500 visitors and featured numerous exhibitions and cultural activities. Other WWD events were simultaneously held around the globe.

5th Earth Hour

Earth Hour, organized by environmental group WWF,  aims to raise global awareness of climate change by encouraging individuals and businesses around the world to turn their lights off for sixty minutes. The movement started in 2007 in Sydney Australia and by 2008 had spread across the globe. Around 128 countries now take part with iconic landmarks around the world such as ‘Big Ben’ in London, the Empire State Building in New York and the Eiffel Tower in Paris dimming their lights.

61st Hannover Messe

Hannover Messe is the world’s biggest industrial fair and is home to the latest industrial technology innovations. The event itself is made up of several different trade fairs, each focused on a different area of industrial technology. This year the ‘energy’ segment of Hannover Messe will present the latest renewable energy / energy efficient technologies and concepts with a focus on interconnected energy efficient ‘Smart Cities’. China is this year’s partner country with the theme ‘Green Intelligence’. In total more than 4,500 innovations will be on display across all categories, far eclipsing almost any other trade show with a focus on renewable energy.

13th Solarexpo

In 2012 Solarexpo will focus on key trends in renewable energy including PV cell manufacturing and architecture. Despite the name of the event, Solarexpo includes exhibitors from a range of renewable energy systems including wind power, alternative vehicles and hydrogen. The event attracts over 1,000 exhibitors representing around 43 European and non European countries and receives over 69,000 industry visitors. In terms of visitor numbers the Solarexpo is similar to Expo Solar (February 15-17) yet has a much broader focus.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day, abbreviated to WED, is a global celebration of positive environmental action. The UN-promoted event began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main ways in which the organization draws attention to environmental issues around the world.  At the time of writing the theme for this year’s event had not yet been announced. World Environment Day comes shortly after Earth Hour (March 31), a worldwide effort organized by the WWF to draw attention to climate change.

21st Intersolar

Since its opening in 1991 Intersolar has grown to become one of the biggest solar energy exhibitions of the year, attracting upwards of 72,000 guests and 1,884 exhibitors from 43 countries per annum. The event is used as a showcase for the latest products in the solar and photovoltaic markets from around the world. In 2012 the event will be looking at the future of low-cost photovoltaics and industry regulations; the number of exhibitors attending is also predicted to increase by around six percent. In terms of visitor size, the event eclipses Expo Solar (February 15-17) and is more similar in size, if not focus, to Solarexpo (May 9-11).

Solar Power International 2012

Solar Power International focuses on all aspects of solar power, including marketing, manufacturing and product development. The event attracts over 24,000 visitors from the solar power trade, more than 3,000 public attendees and upwards of 930 exhibitors per year. In addition to being a product showcase, the event also hosts seminars and educational conferences on all aspects of the solar industry. In terms of visitor size Solar Power International is eclipsed by Intersolar which this year takes place June 11-14 in Munich, Germany.

7th Green Awards

The annual Green Awards honor celebrities, businesses and NGOs that promote or pursue environmental sustainability solutions. The awards are open to nominations around the world and the final winners are selected by a panel of expert judges, and, in the case of the celebrities — public votes. Previous winners have included household names such as Nokia and Marks Spencer. The awards have a larger, more international scope than the German Sustainability Awards held earlier in November — even though the latter have honored such international stars as singer Annie Lennox.
At the time of writing the dates for the Green Awards 2012 had not yet been confirmed.
