A senior Chinese official, who voiced vigorous support for President Xi Jinping’s campaign against government corruption, has reportedly fallen under investigation for graft charges.
Chinese investigators have targeted Wang Min, the leader of the Communist Party in the city of Jinan, for suspected “serious breaches of the law and discipline,” the party’s graft watchdog confirmed in a statement on Thursday.
The announcement came after Wang, who has been outspoken on the need for a clean government, gave a speech on the subject on Thursday, Chinese media reported.
The official also led an inspection of state departments against corruption, according to media reports.
Wang is the most senior official from China’s Shandong province to face a graft investigation. The coastal province on the East China Sea is home to many foreign-invested companies and factories.
The Chinese government has embarked on a large-scale campaign against deep-rooted graft in the past two years.
Xi has pledged to bring corrupt officials to justice and promote the country’s legal system amid his efforts to restore trust in the Communist Party, which has been hit by a series of graft and abuse-of-power scandals.
Earlier this month, Beijing announced that an investigation had been launched into graft charges against former domestic security chief Zhou Yongkang, who is the highest-profile figure caught up in Xi’s corruption crackdown so far.
Tens of thousands of officials have already been arrested since Xi enforced a wide-ranging crackdown on corruption within the Communist Party. The president said widespread graft threatens the party’s survival.
