Tokyo’s first giant panda cub in 24 years born to diplomatic dispute

“Ishihara’s scheme to undermine China-Japan relations is a clumsy
performance,” Hong Lei, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, said
shortly after Gov Ishihara’s comments. “It will only tarnish the image
of Japan and Tokyo.

“No matter what names the Japanese side gives, it cannot change the fact
that the two pandas belong to China,” Hong said at a press conference
in Beijing. “Likewise, what names Japan gives to the Diaoyu Island and
the adjacent isles, it cannot change the fact that these islands belong to
China.”

Shin Shin and her mate, Ri Ri, arrived in Tokyo last year and are being leased
to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for a fee of around $1 million a year.
