RON Perlman is a dream come true for any pop culture convention organiser. His sci-fi/horror/geek credentials are off the chart.

In addition to his signature role as Hellboy, the crime-fighting demon with a heart of gold, he has also appeared in Star Trek, Blade and Alien movies, and has provided voiceovers for various DC comic book animations and video games, including Halo 2 and Fallout 3.

But the versatile, 63-year-old American actor, who has also been confirmed for a sixth season of acclaimed bikie drama Sons Of Anarchy, has an uneasy relationship with the conventions such at the Comic-Con he attended in Melbourne last weekend.

“I am kind of reluctant to see that kind of unbridled enthusiasm,” he admits.

“Part of me really appreciates it and loves it and is kind of awed by it, and a part of me is very uncomfortable with it because I just try to be as normal as I can and not call attention to myself in any way.”

Perlman is now hoping to make a third Hellboy movie – but acknowledges it could be an uphill battle both for him physically, as well as getting the movie financed.

“There is a determination on my part to fight for this for as long as I can because we have asked people to take this journey with us – we have given them two films with the promise that in the third film everything would be resolved.

“So we feel obligated to continue the conversation at least.”

The green light for the second sequel might well rest on the success of Perlman’s latest film, Pacific Rim, his fifth collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, who directed both of the Hellboys.

The pair have worked together for 21 years, ever since the Mexican director’s debut feature, Cronos.

Pacific Rim continues del Toro’s fascination with the monstrous as seen in movies such as Pan’s Labyrinth. Mimic and Blade 2 . But despite the dark material del Toro is drawn to, Perlman insists his friend is far from a tortured being.

“There are ways he has chosen since he was very little to cope with things that were difficult to process and understand, like we all do – fears, reactions to the slings and arrows and cruelties and the raw realities of being alive,” he says.

“Guillermo is one who has found his escape route through these beautiful fantastical journeys that his mind takes. They bring an order and a beauty to the chaos and act as a sanctuary for himself.”

SEE: Pacific Rim opens July 11.
