The federal government is putting the pressure on the states and territories to stump up their share of funding for national disability insurance scheme (NDIS) launch sites.
“The Commonwealth has put $1 billion on the table from our budget and it’s time for the states to do the same,” Disability Reform Minister Jenny Macklin told ABC Radio on Wednesday.
State, territory and Commonwealth leaders are meeting in Canberra on Wednesday to thrash out a model for shared funding of launch sites around the country.
“Some have put money on the table and that’s very, very welcome but it’s only fair that the other states do too,” Ms Macklin said.
While most premiers and chief ministers have put in comprehensive bids for the launch sites, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman wants the Commonwealth to totally fund a trial site in the regional city of Gympie.
The full scheme, which would be rolled out after the trials in mid-2013, is expected to cost about $7 billion a year by 2018.
Ms Macklin said the objective was to announce the four NDIS launch sites to get the scheme off the ground.
“It’s to make sure that in four places around Australia we can stop the terrible lottery that goes on for people with disability and their families,” she said.
