Leonid Tibilov became South Ossetia’s first president by winning Sunday’s presidential election, election officials said on Monday.
“We will develop the relationship with Russia in all areas. We are aiming to make an old dream about the reunification of South and North Ossetia a reality,” Tibilov told reporters at a polling station in the region’s capital, Tskhinvali on Sunday.
Moscow recognized South Ossetia, with a population of 30,000 people, as an independent nation after a war broke out between Russia and Georgia in 2008.
South Ossetia had previously attempted to achieve independence from Georgia in the early 1990s. Georgia says that South Ossetia’s presidential election is illegitimate.
