Three killed in Afghanistan earthquakes

“We have reports of around 60 people trapped under rubble. We still don’t know whether they are alive or dead,” the head of Afghanistan’s natural disaster department, Samim Afzali told AFP on Monday.

Dozens of mud homes and a school reportedly collapsed in a remote village in the province of Baghlan’s Burka district.

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake reportedly hit the area early Monday. A 5.7-magnitude quake followed about half an hour later.

According to Baghlan provincial government spokesman Mahmood Ahmad, houses had been damaged in three districts of Burka, Jelga, and Nehrin.

Another 10 houses have also reportedly been destroyed in neighbouring Takhar Province. No immediate reports of casualties have been made from this area.

Rescue teams have been sent to the mentioned locations. Officials say most of those missing are women and children.

Earthquakes frequently strike northern Afghanistan and Pakistan.
