Three people have been found dead in a unit in Sydney’s west.
Police made the grim discovery after being called to a unit at St Johns Park just after 7am (AEST) on Sunday.
Minutes later, officers arrested a 44-year-old man who was taken to Liverpool Hospital.
That man is being treated for unspecified injuries, police said.
“At this stage we have three deceased persons inside the unit, two men and a woman,” Fairfield Local Area Commander Peter Lennon told reporters.
He was unable to confirm reports that the victims were believed to be a mother and father and their son.
“We are conducting our inquiries as to what took place, we are canvassing the neighbours and the nearby area,” Supt Lennon said.
It was too soon to say how the three people died and there was no apparent motive at this stage.
He added there was a family registered at the address where the bodies were found in a bedroom.
The address was not known to police before Sunday morning.
“We are still trying to establish the actual identification of these people so it would be improper for me to speak about (the victims’ relationship),” he said.
Supt Lennon described the scene as shocking.
The three bodies were found together in the unit’s main bedroom – two lying on the bed and another nearby – and the family pets had apparently been slaughtered.
“I’ve just heard from my police officers that were first there; they said that there was a lot of blood inside the unit, and there are two deceased dogs in the unit,” he said.
No murder weapon has been found.
The 000 call that drove police to the scene was made by an unknown male.
Fairfield police and the homicide squad are investigating.
