At least three people are killed in fresh attacks on the main international airport in Libya’s capital city of Tripoli, a security official says.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the fighting on Sunday killed two gunmen from Misrata. A civilian also died when a stray rocket hit his house within the airport’s vicinity.
According to reports, a Libyan Arab Airlines plane was also hit by a mortar shell.
Intense fighting has been going on since July 13, when rival militias unleashed dozens of rocket attacks on Tripoli International Airport and some key road intersections in a bid to bring the airport under their control.
The ongoing violence has caused extensive damage to planes and airport infrastructure, with the airport expected to remain closed for months. Gas stations, government offices and banks across Tripoli have been closed for a week over security issues.
The fresh attack came despite an agreement reached between rival militant groups two days ago to begin observing a truce and to hand over the airport’s control to neutral forces.
The airport is controlled by the militias from the town of Zintan, southwest of the capital, since the overthrow of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
Nearly three years after the fall of Gaddafi, Libya is still grappling with rising insecurity as the country has been witnessing numerous clashes between government forces and rival militia groups.
The former rebels refuse to lay down arms despite efforts by the central government to impose law and order.
Many angry Libyan demonstrators frequently take to the streets in different cities to protest against the lack of security across the North African country.
