Thousands without power in stormy Sydney

Thousands of Sydneysiders are without power as gale-force winds and torrential rain sweep across NSW, downing trees and power lines.

State emergency crews have received more than 300 calls for help from across the state after a weather band moved north from Victoria throughout the day.

NSW Fire and Rescue is responding to about 20 incidents across the metropolitan area, mostly involving fallen trees.

Emergency crews are working to restore power to about 13,500 Sydney homes and businesses.

Ausgrid said the main areas affected are Bankstown, Sutherland, Darlinghurst and Manly Vale.

“Crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore the power supply,” Ausgrid said in a statement.

Wind gusts of 104km/h have been recorded at Sydney Airport, which “is just one example of the many very high wind measurements we’ve had along the NSW coast today”, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

“We expect the winds to gradually ease overnight, but only gradually,” BoM Severe Weather Meteorologist Andrew Haigh told AAP.

He said the rain, although heavy, was not the major concern.

“There will be heavy rain for a short time, but it won’t last long enough to accumulate enough to cause serious flooding issues.”

Trains have been suspended between Waterfall and Thirroul on the South Coast Line due to heavy rain activating safety monitors at Stanwell Park.

State Emergency Services incident controller Tony Pinelli said the weather warning extended north up the coast from Narrabeen and Collaroy to the Entrance North, Noraville, Norah Head, Wamberal and Terrigal.

Damaging surf conditions are expected with waves of seven to eight metres, causing serious beach erosion.

There’s also the possibility of low-lying property inundation.

The ACT’s state emergency service says it has received 173 calls for help since midnight on Tuesday morning.

The majority of calls were for trees and branches across roads and pathways, with only minor damage being reported.

Energy supplier Ausgrid reported that 10,000 homes were without power at Sutherland in Sydney’s south, Warriewood, Manly Vale and Bayview on the northern beaches, Lane Cove on the lower north shore, Woy Woy, Empire Bay and Killcare Heights on the central coast, and Newcastle.

Endeavour Energy crews are working to restore power at 7600 homes at Coledale, Stanwell Park, Helensburgh, Wombarra and Coalcliff in Wollongong, along with Mollymook, Bawley Point, Termeil and Kioloa on the south coast.
