Thousands of Russians hold hands against Vladimir Putin

Activist Yevgenia Chirikova, a businesswoman who only became active in the
opposition after fighting over the planned destruction of a forest north of
Moscow, expressed similar sentiments, saying the protests were for the
hearts and minds of Russians.

“We can achieve the most important thing – changing the consciousness of
the people. Our battle is not a battle for power, but for changing the
consciousness of the people. People should understand that ‘you have to get
the slave out of yourself,’ that’s what (Russian writer Anton) Chekhov said,”
said Ms Chirikova.

Alexei Navalny, the opposition blogger and lawyer who has emerged as one of
the most recognisable faces of the opposition movement, acknowledged that Mr
Putin would win the poll, but the opposition would not end.

“Russia will never be the same. Tens of thousands of people have gone out
into the street to demonstrate that we won’t let our votes be stolen
further. Yes, March 4, everyone understands. March 4, Putin will announce
himself president again, but this doesn’t mean anything. We will not
recognise him,” Navalny said.

The organisers of the “White Ring” said they needed 34,000 people to
complete the circle around Moscow’s historic centre, which includes the
Kremlin, the main centre of power in Russia.
It was not immediately clear how many had gathered.
