nsnbc : Some 11,000 civilians have left towns in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta Saturday morning, reported the Russian military. Evacuations of civilians from areas held by Al-Nusra and Jaish-al-Islam have been ongoing over the past days and are expected to continue despite occasional interruptions.
Maj. Gen. Vladimir Zolotukhin from the Russian Defense Ministry’s Center for Reconciliation in Syria told reporters Saturday morning: “At the moment 11,300 people have left [Eastern Ghouta], on average over 3,000 people per hour are passing through the humanitarian corridor”.
Earlier he said: “The flow of people is comparable to the day when the civilians started to leave [Eastern Ghouta]. [On Thursday] around 11,000 people left Eastern Ghouta.”
On Thursday and Friday some of the evacuees were brought to the temporary housing center in al-Dweir where most of them experienced the first night in relative calm and safety for months or years.
The General Command of the Syrian Arab Army reported Friday that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and allied forces now control 70 percent of the area in Eastern Ghouta previously controlled by armed insurgents.
