Thousands evacuated as flooding continues

More than 1000 people have been evacuated from homes in NSW’s Riverina region as the state’s flood crisis escalates.

The Murrumbidgee River at Wagga Wagga, in the state’s southwest, is due to flood at noon (AEDT) on Monday and again on Tuesday.

Residents across the city and in neighbouring Gumly Gumly were ordered from their homes on Sunday evening, with many spending the night huddled in temporary shelters.

Residents downstream in Gundagai were evacuated on Monday morning.

Wagga Wagga City Airport remained open.

The State Emergency Service (SES) foreshadowed further evacuations in Forbes, in the state’s central west, later in the day.

“On top of the thousand people that we’ve issued evacuation orders for in Wagga, we’ve now got 4600 people subject to evacuation orders right across a broad area of the state,” SES Commissioner Murray Kear told the Seven Network on Monday.

Mr Kear said 2500 people were isolated by floods across NSW.

Another part of the Riverina region was also evacuated on Sunday night, when the main canal levee at Roach’s Regulator, near Yanco, was deliberately breached as a pre-emptive measure to protect up to 300 endangered properties.

The exercise was expected to affect six properties.

Heavy rain continued to deluge parts of NSW overnight into Monday.
