A brave woman from Ontario, Canada feels no remorse after she gave water to thirsty pigs in a truck on their way to the slaughterhouse on a very hot day in June.
Animal Rights Activist, Anita Krajnc and a group she started a few years ago called “Toronto Pig Save” have been working hard to raise awareness about animal rights, and promoting a vegan lifestyle.
She is currently facing a mischief charge for the aforementioned actions that took place last June. In mid-September, a Halton Regional police officer served Krajnc with a summons. She was formally charged with mischief under $5,000 in October.
“I think it’s an outrageous charge and goes against my deepest philosophical beliefs in terms of what all our obligations are, and to me the most important thing in life is to be of service to others and to someone or some animal who is suffering,” she said.
“I will not admit guilt to what I did — it’s the right thing to do and we will continue to do it.”
Here Is What Happened
Anita and her friend were waiting for the pigs to arrive on a roadway median when a truck pulled up hauling the pigs from Van Boekel Hog Farms, they were headed to Fearman’s Pork Slaughterhouse, which is about 100 kilometers away. She proceeded to approach the truck and give the pigs water with bottles through the slats in the truck trailor.
The driver then left his truck and began an argument with the two women; this was captured on video.
“Have some compassion, have some compassion!” Krajnc yells in the video to the truck driver.
“Let’s call the cops,” the driver says, holding his phone.
“Call Jesus,” Krajnc says as she continues to allow the pigs to drink the water.
“Yeah, no. What do you got in that water?” he asks.
“Water,” Krajnc says.
“No, no, how do I know?” he says.
“Trust me,” she says.
“Don’t put it in there again,” he says.
“If this pig is thirsty, they’ll have water,” she says.
“You do it again and I’ll slap it out of your hands,” he says.
“Go ahead, if you want an assault charge, go ahead! Film this, film this, film this!” Krajnc yells.
Shortly after the driver gets back in his truck and drives away.
The next day a complaint was filed with the police by the owner of the farm, Eric Van Boekel.
CTV News recently covered the story and interviewed Krajnc.
From Boekels Perspective
“If you’re driving down the road and you have your window down and you come to an intersection and I feel you need some water or a drink, how would you feel if I stick my hands in your personal space?” Van Boekel said.
According to him, “Those animals are well provided for and well cared for.”
“They can protest all they want — they have the right of freedom of speech that thousands of soldiers have died for,” Van Boekel told The Canadian Press in an interview Tuesday. “I have no problem with them protesting; just leave my stuff alone.”
What Is Toronto Pig Save All About?
Toronto Pig Save is a group of extremely caring, compassionate people who ultimately, aim to put an end to animal suffering and encourage people to get informed and learn about how these animals are being treated. Here is their mission statement:
Our mission is to put “glass walls” on Toronto’s three slaughterhouses: St. Helen’s Meat Packers and Ryding-Regency Meat Packers cow slaughterhouses located at 1 and 7 Glen Scarlett Road, and Maple Leaf Poultry chicken slaughterhouse located at 100 Ethel Avenue. Our goal is to encourage people: to join us and bear witness of the suffering of animals in transport and at slaughterhouses, to go vegan, to be daily animal activists, to protect the environment, to promote healthy living, to support farm sanctuaries, and to work towards a just transition for workers and the creation of meaningful and nonviolent work in a vegan food economy.

Don Cherry Gives His Opinion
Even Don Cherry, Canadian Icon and host of Hockey Night In Canada, took to twitter to defend Krajnc and the charges laid,
1) Life is strange in Canada these days. On one hand we have creeps in jail living the life of Riley. They murder, rape, you name it.

What Do You Think?
Was what Krajnc did an act of mischief or an act of compassion? Does she deserve to pay the fine of $5000 and be charged with criminal mischief? Many people agree that this charge is a complete waste of taxpayer’s dollars. According to CBC News, Gary Grill, Kranjc’s Toronto-based lawyer, said the charge is puzzling. “In legal circles, people are scratching their heads.”
We can clearly see in the videos posted that these animals are not being taken care of properly. Simply because they are on their way to the slaughterhouse, does that mean they no longer need to be treated in a humane way? Please share your opinion in the comments below!
