Third explosion hits Syria’s Idlib

Casualties are feared in the third blast which shook the university neighborhood in Idlib on Monday.

Activists say at least 20 people were killed and dozens of others were injured in twin explosions targeting the Air Force Intelligence headquarters and the Military Intelligence buildings in Idlib earlier in day.

Syrian official news agency SANA, however, put the death toll at eight, blaming terrorist groups fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad for the attacks.

UN observers have visited sites of explosions.

Meanwhile, several people were also injured after armed groups attacked a police patrol and the Central Bank building the capital Damascus.

The attacks come despite a ceasefire that took effect in Syria on April 12 and the presence of UN observers tasked with monitoring the truce in the country.

The ceasefire was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March aimed at ending months of unrest in the country.

Head of the UN observer mission Major General Robert Mood, who arrived in Damascus on Sunday, demanded that all sides cooperate to end the “armed violence” in Syria.

“To achieve the success of the Kofi Annan plan, I call on all sides to stop violence and help us continue the cessation of armed violence,” the Norwegian general said in a press conference upon arrival in Damascus.
