Children’s charities have expressed fury over a babygro they say makes light of child abuse.

The £15 garment, which has now been taken down from Amazon and eBay, features the slogan ‘They Shake Me’ below a picture of two cartoon eyeballs.

HiveTees, which was selling the babygro on Amazon, described it as looking ‘good on all babies, both boys and girls.’

The NSPCC said shaking was ‘no joking matter,’ while The Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) said the babygro was ‘endorsing child abuse.’

Every year the courts deal with around 200 cases of babies being shaken, which can result in a serious brain injury.

Lisa Turan, CEO, CBIT, said: ‘Promoting this type of appalling activity –  ‘shaking a baby’ – is nothing less than endorsing child abuse and or dismissing the seriousness of such an act’

NSPCC chief executive Andrew Flanagan said: ‘This is a serious issue and absolutely no joking matter. Making light of child abuse is simply offensive and undermines the hard work of social workers and others who work tirelessly to keep babies and children safe.’

Meanwhile founder of Netmums, Siobhan Freegard, told MailOnline: ‘Shaking a baby is child abuse – and simply isn’t material for a joke slogan.

‘This babygro is in the worst taste.
Before stocking children’s clothes, retailers MDs have to ask themselves
“would I let my child wear this?” If the answer is no, don’t put in on
the shelves.’

Last week
a similar babygro with the slogan ‘Help, I’m being kidnapped, these are
not my parents’ was withdrawn from stockist Kiddicare’s website after
complaints.

Katie T wrote on Netmums: ‘Since when did abducting a child become a laughing matter?’

While
Mary D wrote: ‘I really dislike the slogan tshirts for kids. Most of
them are crude and i don’t use my child as an adult message board.’

A spokesman for the company said: ‘We
take customer feedback extremely seriously and based on customer
comments have chosen to withdraw the Kids Rock line from our site and
store with immediate effect.’

Last
year discount clothes retailer Matalan came under fire after it was
revealed to be selling padded bras to children as young as eight.

The
year before that Primark was shamed into abandoning sales of padded
bikinis for seven-year-olds following a storm of protest over the
sexualisation of young girls.

Personally I find them hilarious. I would definitely buy the “Help, I’m being kidnapped these are not my parents ” shirt. I could put it on my 3 month old nephew whenever I’m watching him for my brother and his wife.

Seriously, who would buy this sort of stuff ?

Words fail me.
I have a good sense of humour…as well as two babies…unsure how in any way this would make you laugh.
The kidnapping one made me giggle a teensy bit mind

Disturbing that the makers find this amusing. Terrifying to think that some morons would put their kids in these!!

Hi, We’d just like to clarify that Kiddicare was a stockist of this product, not the maker or manufacturer. We take customer feedback extremely seriiously and based on customer comments have chosen to withdraw the Kids Rock line from our site and store with immediate effect. No offence was intended. If any customers or parents have questions on this matter, please do feel free to contact the team. Thank you.
