The US government stood alone at the United Nations Security Council last Friday as it vetoed a resolution that called for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Every other nation spoke with passion about the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding, with most issuing condemnatory remarks. But the US chose to blame Hamas for the suffering of the people of Gaza—not the ones dropping the munitions it supplies.
After UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres triggered Article 99 of the UN charter, which led to another vote at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on a ceasefire resolution, the US government chose to veto the draft resolution to allow Israel to continue its attack on Gaza. Israel’s assault on the people of Gaza has so far killed nearly 22,000 people and constitutes what UN Aid Chief Martin Griffiths, calls “the worst ever” humanitarian crisis. The people of Gaza are now starving in different areas of the besieged coastal enclave, unable to get a break from the constant bombardment that has covered what seems like every square inch of the territory.
Nowhere is safe in Gaza. Roughly 80% of the population has been forced out of their homes. Israel and the US government have tried to compare the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, to ISIS/Daesh in the past, so here are some sobering statistics: In the first two years of the ISIS insurgency in Iraq, the UN said the terrorist group had killed 18,800 civilians. In contrast, in only two months, Israel has killed nearly 22,000 Palestinians. So far, roughly 1% of the entire population of 2.3 million in Gaza has been wiped out in what is widely being condemned as a genocide. Israel kills one child every 10 minutes.
Amnesty International has condemned the US decision to veto the UNSC resolution calling for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, a vote at the UN General Assembly on a similar ceasefire resolution passed with an overwhelming majority on Tuesday. Even Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, which had all opposed calls for a ceasefire and stood up for Israel consistently, voted for a ceasefire.
The US Supports Genocide
US President Joe Biden, otherwise known today as “Genocide Joe,” has consistently supported Israel’s attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. The White House has taken no responsibility for its role in fostering the current war in the Gaza Strip nor has it accepted the criticisms laid against it for refusing to allow a UNSC ceasefire resolution to pass or to at least pressure Israel to stop. With this callous approach, the Biden and the White House are enabling the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Joe Biden’s approval ratings have dropped to historic lows following his post-October 7th action. A Muslim-American movement, the ‘Abandon Biden Campaign,’ has also been launched to ensure that Biden does not win a second term in office. The US government’s support of the Zionist regime is in stark contrast to the will of the majority of American voters, who want to see an immediate ceasefire, according to polls. Despite Biden constantly lying about what happened on October 7, including his infamous repetition of the lie that he saw confirmed photos of Hamas beheading children, it does not appear that the average American voter has been properly convinced that more killing and war is the answer. In fact, when it comes to the American public, it is only the older generations that largely support Israel. Those 35 and under mostly support the Palestinian people.
What is happening to Gaza right now is as clear as day: It is an outright slaughter of innocent human beings day in and day out. Still, in two whole months of its war on Gaza, Israel has been unable to secure a single major military achievement. Israel has failed to destroy the Palestinian resistance groups’ tunnel systems, failed to capture any of their prisoners of war, failed to assassinate the senior leadership of Hamas, and most importantly, failed to “crush and destroy” Hamas completely as they claimed they would do.
We hear from US media and politicians that “Hamas must go” and that Israel is justified in its mission because they have to achieve this goal. Yet, we are more than two months into the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, and it is the Israeli army that is getting pulverized on the ground—not Hamas. We see from the daily battle videos that Israeli forces are being killed by Palestinian armed groups. At the same time, there has only been a single video in which an Israeli soldier is featured allegedly killing what appears to be two Palestinian fighters (although the video’s credibility is still questionable). Israeli media is now starting to reveal that the army is covering up its casualties to a significant degree after Israeli media visited public hospitals housing injured fighters and concluded that the officials’ tolls are lies.
Israel Has Already Lost
Now, the obvious question at hand is as follows: What can Israel do to finish this? Well, the answer to this is quite obvious. It has two options: Either they end the aggression or they escalate to the point of regional war. By preventing a ceasefire, the US government is allowing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to veer closer and closer to a wider regional conflict. If such a conflict erupts, it will necessitate the US becoming directly involved and could eventually trigger a nuclear war. Most Westerners do not understand the reality of the region and believe that the US could simply “take out Iran” in such a war, as well as that Israel is a major power in West Asia. Both beliefs are completely incorrect. If Hezbollah and Israel go to war, Lebanese Hezbollah will either demolish Israel and force it to beg for an end to the conflict or trigger the Israelis to use their nuclear weapons. When it comes to Iran, the US cannot conquer it, and if they tried, every US soldier in the region would become a direct target. The only way to actually inflict a blow is with the use of a nuclear weapon—and once one nuke flies, all bets are off globally.
The truth is that Israel was defeated strategically on October 7, and it cannot destroy Hamas. What we are seeing today is a sadistic mass murder campaign designed to punish the people of Gaza for the actions of Palestinian armed groups in the most barbaric possible way. Israel has no real goal other than the hope that so much will be destroyed in Gaza that the people will be forced to flee into neighboring Egypt. The US is in full support of this bloodletting. Why? The US and Israel are sending a message to the world that when you challenge them militarily, this is what happens. Make no mistake: What Hamas did on October 7 was a huge blow to US power in the region. It challenged Western hegemony, and for this, the civilians of Gaza have become the object of a genocidal campaign.
At this time, the end of the conflict will be dictated by the fate of one man—Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli prime minister knows that this is the end of his political career, so he is now attempting to secure his future in any way possible. To do this, he has to play a careful balancing act that keeps his fanatical government together. The US is now entertaining talks of bringing the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA) in to govern Gaza, which triggered anger from Netanyahu’s coalition partners. As a result, the Israeli premier has reiterated his long-held position that there will never be a Palestinian state and even declared that he is ready to go to war with the PA. With Netanyahu still in power, it is hard to see how the conflict ends because he cannot conclude it in any way other than a regional war if he wants to keep his extremist allies on his side.
The religious fanatics in his coalition have little interest in the territory of Gaza when compared to the importance of the West Bank. Israeli cabinet ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich believe that the PA is their worst enemy because it threatens their much-desired seizure of the West Bank, which they call “Judea and Samaria.” Therefore, the idea that the PA will replace Hamas in Gaza is the worst possible solution.
While these psychotic religious extremists run the Israeli apartheid regime, the US government supplies them with endless bombs and funds so they can commit any scale of atrocities they desire. US politicians behave as if they were Israeli politicians, seeking to strip their own citizens of free speech on the issue and to hand over as much US tax money to Tel Aviv as possible. While Biden has started to publicly criticize the Netanyahu government’s indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, the US president has taken no substantive action to discourage or halt the ongoing assault on Gaza. Rather, he has helped ensure the continued flow of military aid to Israel without conditions, rendering his rhetoric against the bombings meaningless.
What the world has witnessed since October 7 is the US empire’s mask falling off. We have all come to realize that the notions of “free speech,” “democracy,” and a “rules-based order” are hogwash. There is no international law, and there are no human rights. There are the powerful and the powerless. The only way the people can achieve justice is through building their own power and challenging those who rule over them. Appealing to the system will never achieve justice—unless it’s the kind of “justice” that benefits the ruling class that runs that system.
