The Taco Cleanse: The Tortilla Based Diet Proven To Change Your Life was developed by ‘taco scientists’ Wes Allison, Stephanie Bogdanich, Molly R. Frisinger, and Jessica Morris. After eating tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 30 days straight (and thoroughly enjoying it), they wanted to help others to do the same.
I can admit at first glance I thought this was absolutely ridiculous and was surprised to see that this was, in fact, a real thing, especially with statements like the following:
“Are you looking to grow a beard? The Taco Cleanse has been shown to produce a glorious beard for the formerly hairless!”
“Are you trying to conceive a child? In a recent study 100% of women trying to conceive successfully became pregnant within weeks of being on the Taco Cleanse.”
Not to mention the outlandish purported benefits of following this cleanse…
- You will wake up in the morning with new enthusiasm when you know your day is going to start with a breakfast taco.
- Your chakras will become realigned into an optimal taco pattern.
- Your life will become more fun and you will make more friends while consuming the required margarita supplements on the plan.
- Your sleep will improve as you begin to detox from the negative self images associated with other diet plans.
All joking aside, upon further inspection I started to understand how and why this could actually be beneficial for some people. This book is equipped with 75 recipes and every single one of them is vegan! Following this diet could certainly mark a positive shift for those who are used to consuming large amounts of meats and other processed animal products on a regular basis.
Are There Real Benefits That Can Be Gained From Following This Diet?
By following this diet you also happen to be cutting out fattening items such as butter, cheese, pork, processed meats, sour cream, and other processed items that contain a lot of sugar. If you do not generally consume many vegetables, then, rest assured, you will be now. Most of the recipes in this book consist primarily of tortillas, refried beans, and guacamole. If made healthfully, these can all be part of a balanced diet — especially if topped with fresh vegetables such as lettuce, peppers, onions, jalapeños, etc.
Even some celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon…

Are There Potential Risks Or Health Concerns?
To get the most out of this diet and if you are legitimately thinking of trying it (remember: this means tacos only for 30 days), then there are a few key things to keep in mind. Since the recipes use flour and corn tortillas (and even waffle wraps!), you should be sure to use organic corn and organic flour so as to avoid harmful pesticides and genetically modified ingredients. Also make sure to add as many fresh veggies as possible so that you are consuming the necessary enzymes to assist with the digestion process. Some of the recipes include updated, vegan versions of things like mac and cheese and ‘tater tots.’ While these are fine on occasion, they should not comprise the bulk of your diet.
A taco is a traditional Mexican dish and the people of Mexico have been eating tacos and variants of tacos for centuries. When you think about it, nachos, enchiladas, burritos, tostados, etc., are all just basically tacos prepared in a different way. With this being said, you certainly can survive off this diet.
A Few Things To Consider
Don’t get hung up on following this ‘cleanse’ to a T. If you legitimately want to start eating healthier and perhaps trying out a plant based diet, then do just that. You can use this book for some fun new ideas, but don’t feel limited; have a smoothie or a salad if you want to.
As someone who already follows a primarily plant-based diet, I would be interested in purchasing this book, mainly just for the 75 new vegan taco recipes! I think I would get sick of tacos pretty quickly if I were eating them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but I’d be more than happy to try out some of the recipes.
