A ‘polite’ bank robber is being hunted by police after attempting to pull off a lunch time stick up by posing as a customer.

Cashiers at the Lloyds TSB branch in Manchester assumed he was just another ordinary account holder as he got in line with other customers waiting to make cash withdrawals.

But when the thug approached the counter after patiently waiting his turn, staff were stunned when instead of handing over his bank card and details, he slid a menacing handwritten note under the protective glass demanding cash.

The letter, written in capitals in pencil and then highlighted in blue biro, read: ‘This is a robbery. Do not say or do anything! Fill the bag with £50 and £20 notes. I have a gun in my right arm! Hurry up.’

The robber then handed a carrier bag to the 23-year old shocked cashier who went away suggesting she should speak to the bank manager.

Instead she told a colleague who called police and urged them to rush to the bank in Manchester city centre.

After a few minutes, when the cashier did not return to the counter, the robber realised he was about to get caught and walked off empty handed.

Armed police arrived at the bank three minutes later.

Greater Manchester Police issued a picture of the note and a CCTV image of the raider following the incident at about 1pm on Thursday 15 December 2011.

The robber is described as being a white man, in his early 20s, of slim build and 6ft tall. He was wearing a black scarf that covered his face.

A police spokesman said: ‘The offender, with his face partially concealed, went into the Lloyds TSB on Mosely Street in Manchester and queued up with other customers.

‘When he went to the counter he handed a note to the cashier that read: ‘This is a robbery; do not say or do anything. Fill the bag with £50 and £20 notes. I have a gun in my right arm. Hurry up’.

‘He handed a bag to the cashier who went away. After a few minutes the cashier did not return so the offender left.

‘Officers have released a CCTV image taken from the bank in a bid to try and trace him.’

Detective Constable Keith Gibbs added: ‘This was a bizarre incident, but all that m

atters to us is that a man made threats to a member of staff at a busy bank and implied that he had a gun.

‘We would urge anyone with information, or anyone who may recognise this man, to come forward.’

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0161 856 3555 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
