Two Scottish police officers took on a different kind of beat during a band’s hotel gig.
In footage that has just emerged online, the policemen joined in with the performance, playing electric guitar and the drums in their uniforms.
They’d gone into the Caledonian Hotel as part of a routine patrol in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

Rock ‘n’ roll patrol: One of the officers strums an electric guitar during the impromptu performance at the Caledonian Hotel in Stornoway, Scotland
And, when they appeared in front of the band A Promise To No One, the officers were asked by members if they wanted to play during one of their songs.
Footage of the brilliant moment was captured and posted on to Facebook by Gordon Smith.
Both officers are seen handling their instruments with confidence, obviously both having experience in playing live.
You better make sure you’re on the right beat: The other unnamed policeman takes his place behind the drums
Surprise arrival: The policeman appeared to have prior knowledge of their chosen instruments
And Facebook users were impressed with the policemens’ performance.
Ruth Campbell said: ‘The Police, reformed in Stornoway.’
While Scott Maciver, simply stated: ‘Amazing.’
The Northern Constabulary officers had been on patrol during the Royal National Mod in October last year – the annual festival celebrates Gaelic language, culture and history.

A police spokesman said: ‘We have a community policing style in the Highlands and Islands second to none.
‘Public confidence and goodwill are fundamental to successful police work and helps us to have the lowest crime and highest detection rates in the UK.
‘Although we are a small force in numbers, we have a lot of very talented people working for Northern Constabulary and some are very good musicians. Indeed, the chief constable is a keen piper and very active in the pipe band.’
He added: ‘As police we have to deal with some very serious matters and it is good to show the lighter side of community policing.’

Good thing about music in pubs is that you can always get a few coppers.

I went to police Training School with the drummer of the Hollies. At the hight of the rock band he gave it all up to become a copper. Several were self employed, one a lorry driver, one had owned two greengrocery shops. At least three were ex-brickies but 50% of the class were ex-military army, navy and one from the RAF. I find it strange how DM readers support the army in Afghanistan but don’t support the same guy when he changes uniform. I gave a lecture at one school (my old school) and one 15 years old told me ‘we’ didn’t understand the public. So what does he think I am when I’m not working?

Good for them. As far as I’m concerned they have improved Police public relations by 100%. More of the same needed in other areas.

“Good on them!!” — agreed. If they had spent all evening playing that would have been wrong, but this is exactly what the police should be about. Far more productive than years of public engagement strategy meetings and the like.
