The clock is ticking, and Britain’s Olympic hopefuls are doing all they can to get ready for the Games.

But one athlete could be taking things a little further than the rest.

British triathlete hope Vanessa Raw, 27, wants to scale new heights in training and make sure she’s conditioning herself at every possible moment.

So, she’s set up a special training tent in her home in south west London and is sleeping in it.

The tent is meant to help simulate breathing conditions at altitudes up to 12,000ft, and supercharge her 40 winks.

Britain’s Olympians like Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe regularly train at altitude camps, most recently in Kenya, because living and training above sea level increases their red blood cells. This enhances their athletics performance because red blood cells carry oxygen to the body.

For hopefuls like Raw, sleeping in an altitude tent is the next best thing if they are unable afford or travel to places above sea level.

Durham-born Raw has also been using her hypoxic breathing apparatus while cycling indoors at her art studio at home in Kingston-upon-Thames to help with the training.

The 27-year-old took up the sport while studying for a degree in Fine Art at Loughborough University in June 2010.

She quickly rose through the ranks to join Britain’s brightest young talents in the British Olympic triathlon academy squad.

But her staggering success in the triathlon was halted by a series of injuries, including a troublesome knee complaint, stress fractures and muscle troubles.

The unlucky Raw, who still picks up the paintbrush despite competing full-time, was also diagnosed
with anaemia.

It followed her collapse after the ITU World Championship
Series race in Sydney two years ago.

But since then her fortunes have improved, and she is also trying to carve out a blossoming career as an artist.

A
new coaching and management team – coupled with a move to her current
training base in Kingston – saw her return to form with a bang last year
as she finished 10th at a World Cup race in Mexico before winning the
Eilat ITU Triathlon European Cup in Israel in October.

It
has put her back in the hunt for one of two unclaimed 2012 Olympic
places behind leading Brit Helen Jenkins and Raw is out to take her
chance, whatever it takes.

“The tent is meant to help simulate breathing conditions at altitudes up to 12,000ft”…and the point of this is? She does know that London is flat, right?!

Truly pathetic, as are the Olympics.

@R.Bowie
You’re right to an extent. However if you’re unable to train on Mt Everest… what she is doing is the next best thing.
Going to the Gym, sport…most Athletes will hold up their hands and declare that they are addicted to it. After a while it’s just something they can’t give up and pushing their bodies harder and harder to be the peak of what they do is something they strive for. To have ambition in sports you MUST be obsessed with it.
While along with you I think that people should be more natural about their training regimes…i.e Cycling up and down the south wales valleys all day ^_^ (I’m not even a professional cyclist .), would I be able to hack her training regime? No. It’s quite likely that she could out do me on every hill around here without thinking about it. Why? Because she pushes herself harder.
It’s like those students who demand nothing less than A*, CEO’s who work 50 hour weeks just to make their business successful. It’s human nature.

Shouldn’t tent be spelled tentt and ddoesn’t stress havee one t ?Why can’t the DM prooff reed their artikles before presentin all this bad spelllin on their webb sight.

“under canvass”????????? FOR CHRIST’S SAKE, GET YOUR PROOF-READING UNDER CONTROL DM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bride of darth vader she looks hot in that mask , carry on camping dear good luck

Sorry – I’m old school. This isn’t athletic ambiton, it’s obsession, going to such ludicrous lengths and portraying it as admirable athletic discipline. I suppose they’re all doing it now but it ain’t sport.
