The Olympic Games Opening: Let the Fun Begin

It’s the first official day of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The celebrations begin.

At 8:12 am (GMT) thousands of bells across the land rang out to celebrate the opening as part of All The Bells. Big Ben chimed continuously-40 times-for three minutes, the first time it has broken its regular sequence since the funeral of George VI in 1952.

And, special to TreeHugger, this delightful compilation of all the alternative Olympic Logos has been released.

Some may have been following Sarah Hyndman’s daily creation of Olympic logos made out of the mundane objects of daily life–shrimps, coins and paper parasols. They depicted a DIY, recycle, re-use side of the Olympics combined with that great sense of British irony.

And join us on TreeHugger for two weeks of on the spot reporting of the upcoming Olympic fun (and madness).
