A 100 kilometers northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula was located, if it existed indeed, an island called the Island of Bermeja. The existence of this mysterious island was verifiable on recorded maps produced between 1535 and 1775 after which mystery surrounded the Island and it disappeared out of historical and geographical records after an expedition in search for the island came back without any results.
In 1857, Bermeja reappeared on a US map and from then until 1946, the mysterious island was included in the books published by the government of Mexico but the mysterious aura never left the island of Bermeja. In 1997 theMexican government decided to explore the area officially and find out what was going on with one of their Island, but this official search found nothing where the island was supposed to be located adding to the mystery of the island.
After this unsuccessful search, dozens of rumors and conspiracy theories began to appear, and all of them usually had one thing in common: OIL. What adds to the mystery is that it happens that at that time, several US oil companies began to drill holes near the border with Mexico in search of black gold. The theories regarding the island of Bermeja had rumors but also facts according to many. A Mexican politician, Senator José Angel Conchello, reported that the Bermeja had been disappeared voluntarily. After this statement, Senator Jose Angel Conchello died in a mysterious car accident.
In the year 2000, when the maritime areas of Mexico and the United States were delimited the island of Bermjea was nowhere to be seen assuming its nonexistence.
Some believe that the reason this island does not exist today is because the CIA destroyed the island to expand the economic zone given to the United States.
The importance of the existence of the island is high because if it does or did exist it would be an important factor that would hep determine the boundaries for exploitation rights of oil in the so called Doughnut Holes located in the Gulf of Mexico.
