Now we know which states in the U.S. are the happiest — but which are the saddest?
According to the Gallup Well-Being Index, the most miserable states in America are all concentrated in a bloc that runs from the Midwest to the South. See for yourself on the map below (the bright red area indicates the bottom quintile of states):

The saddest countries in the U.S. are (in order from saddest to happier): West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma and Louisiana.
What accounts for the sadness in the region? Gallup’s Well-Being Index takes a variety of factors into consideration: the respondents’ self-evaluation, mental and physical health of the residents, healthy behaviors, work environments, and access to government resources and infrastructure.
Why do they all have in common? The bottom 10 states lagged in the health categories, but also fell behind in perhaps the most crucial element: the respondents’ self-evaluation of how happy their lives really are.
For instance, West Virginia has the dubious distinction of ranking dead last in this poll. It also scored the lowest in self-evaluation, mental and physical health, healthy behaviors and basic access. The only category where it did not rank the lowest was work environment, which ranked a rather high 14th place.
Similarly, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Kentucky had good or middling grades for work environment — in fact, Oklahoma is in the top quintile of the country, with the 7th best work environment. But that wasn’t enough to overcome the poor health of the respondents in these states, as well as the lack of basic access and the residents’ low evaluation of their own happiness.
In contrast, the happiest states are in a bloc from the Midwest to the Northern Plains, with Vermont and Hawaii being the only outliers. Despite the fact that Iowa and Missouri border each other, Iowa ranks as 10th happiest state, while Missouri is in the measly 43rd place.
