The Mike Rann / Kevin Foley legacy – how has it influenced our state?

Mike Rann and Kevin Foley (ABC News)Mike Rann says history will be the judge of his almost ten years as South Australia’s Premier.

And by his side for a lot of that time was his colleague, then Deputy and Treasurer, Kevin Foley.

The two men created quite a legacy in South Australian politics.

For a long time they held the reigns on the state’s development and were the key decision makers in the big issues for the state.

But on Thursday 20th October 2011, that will all come to an end, when Mike Rann will had over the leadership of the Labor party to incoming Premier Jay Weatherill.

On the 891 Mornings Program last week, presenter Ian Henschke asked Premier Mike Rann to describe what he set out to achieve when he took on the job.

He said he wanted to achieve economic development for the state, while at the same time improving the environment and social conditions in general.

How did he go?

How has that legacy influenced our state?

We asked three experts to give their take on the last ten years.

Dr David Paton, Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of South Australia assessed the state of the environment; Darryl Gobbett, Chief Economist with Prescott Securities the economy; and Dr. Wayne Errington from the Politics Department at the University of Adelaide the general state of society.  

And we asked you, the voters, to give your views too.

Brickbats and bouquets came flying in.
