No matter what you celebrate, the holiday season is often a wonderful excuse to bring together families and loved ones that are usually preoccupied with the hustle and bustle of daily life. Most share food and time together in a comfortable setting that otherwise would be very difficult to coordinate, giving everyone involved the opportunity to both connect and reflect.
With the 2015 holiday season just around the corner, John Lewis has released a Christmas-themed commercial that is currently breaking the internet (figuratively of course). The 2 minute ad, entitled The Man On The Moon, tells the story of a little girl who discovers, through her telescope, an elderly man living an ordinary life on the moon.
The intention behind the commercial is to remind us of the power of our love and how impactful sharing it with one another can be. Check it out:
One particular element I enjoyed about this commercial, whether it was intentional or not, is the social commentary it offers on the state of some of our most vulnerable citizens. While the elderly may no longer be tasked with the challenges of an occupation, old age can often mark some of the most difficult years of one’s life, especially for those not surrounded by the love of their friends and family.
I’m reminded of three recent articles posted on our website which all highlight creative developments that have drastically improved the lives of the elderly in the communities in which they have been implemented.
The first is the partnering, via Skype, of Brazilian students studying the English language with senior citizens in an American retirement home (learn more). The second is in Seattle, Washington, where they put a pre-school in a nursing home (learn more). And the third is in Spain, where they have built outdoor public playgrounds specifically designed so that the elderly may keep fit and connect with one another (learn more).
All three of these initiatives have helped to combat loneliness, depression, and a variety of other hardships commonly correlated with old age, and this commercial can further help the cause. In order for it to be successful, we must let it inspire us to share the love that we have within all of us to anyone who needs it.
