The Hobbit will be made into a trilogy says Peter Jackson

“We know the strength of our cast and of the characters they have brought
to life.

“We know creatively how compelling and engaging the story can be and —
lastly, and most importantly — we know how much of the tale of Bilbo
Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle
of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realise this complex
and wonderful adventure.”

He goes on to paraphrase the author of the classic novels, saying: “It
has been an unexpected journey indeed and, in the words of Professor Tolkien
himself, a tale that grew in the telling.”

Jackson said New Line, MGM and Warner Bros, the production studios behind the
$500 million project, “are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans
this expansive tale across three films”.

Additional shooting for the second film, “There and Back Again,” is
already scheduled for next year but it remains unclear how much more will be
needed to complete the as yet unnamed third film.

Fans have greeted Jackson’s announcement enthusiastically, with his Facebook
entry attracting over 18,000 likes within hours.

The first of the films is due for release on December 14 this year, the second
on December 13, 2013, and the third in 2014.

The Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy grossed almost $2.9 billion
worldwide a decade ago.
