Awake Goy The top five candidates in 2017’s French election are, in alphabetical order: Francois Fillon (Les Republicains), Benoit Hamon (Socialists), Marine Le Pen (Front National) and Emmanual Macron (Independent) and Jean-Luc Mélenchon (Unbowed France).
French elections are usually a two–horse with between the conservative Les Republicains (formerly the UMP) and the left-wing Socialist Party.

A wider range of runoffs is now possible, including the nightmare scenario for the established parties, a Le Pen-Mélenchon head-to-head. The chances that France may be about to add a new chapter to the disruptions of Brexit and the Trump presidency are very real indeed. The result is that three “outsiders” now lead the polls. They may take as much as two-thirds of the vote in the first round between them. Ms Le Pen and Mr Macron continue to be favourites.
