At first glance, this photo appears to show an early morning sightseer enjoying the views from an English pier.

But some believe it may in fact be the eerie ghoul that has haunted fishermen along the Somerset coastline for years after it emerged the pier was closed off to the public when the photo was taken.

And student photographer Matthew Hales, 17, insists the man wasn’t there when he took the picture of the incoming tide for his A Level coursework on an early morning trip to Clevedon, Somerset.

Matthew, who studies at Brimpton Green and Chipping Sodbury Link Sixth Form, was trying to capture different stages of the incoming tide using a time lapse technique on his Nikon D3000, which captures pictures over a 30 second time frame, to later make a video from the stills.

So it wasn’t until he checked the individual frames that he realised he had captured a ghostly male figure standing on the Victorian pier at 6.45am – when the pier was closed off to the public until 10am.

The gate entrance to the pier is locked over night until 10am every morning and only two local angling clubs and the piermistress have keys to open it. Both angling clubs confirmed they did not have any of their members at the pier that day.

Matthew said: ‘When I went through the pictures I was surprised to see the figure of a man standing on the pier – it was almost like he was looking straight at me.

‘The technique I was using captures everything which happens for 30 seconds, so he must have been stood there for at least that long to appear in the picture.

‘However when I checked the frames before and after there was no sign of him or of the figure walking to or away from the location where I seen him.’

The picture – taken by Matthew in November – continued to puzzle him until he heard about ghosts being spotted on the pier by early morning anglers.

A mystery figure has been sighted in the early morning mists by anglers as they cast off from the end of the pier.

The ghost, which can walk through the locked pier gate without triggering off the security light, has been seen by other fishermen.

Sometimes the ghost has been spotted seen halfway along the pier, sitting on the side benches, or standing mumbling incoherently in the corner of the pavilion.

Matthew said: ‘It did freak me out a bit when I saw the figure appear on the pictures.

‘I then checked the pier opening times and saw that it wasn’t due to open until 10am so there would have been no one on the pier at that time in the morning.

‘It was only when I saw the story in the newspaper that I thought I may have caught the ghost on camera.’

The area of the estuary around Clevedon has been dubbed the ‘ghost coast’ because of the number of unexplained paranormal sightings.

Fishermen are allowed on the pier on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, and often fish early in the morning.

But Clevedon piermistress, Linda Strong, is unconvinced the mystery figure is not a fisherman.

Mrs Strong, 56, said: ‘Looking at the pictures there is no evidence that this is a fisherman and the figure seems to have appeared from nowhere.

‘Having zoomed in on the photograph there are clearly no fishing rods out to sea.

‘Generally if there were anglers on the pier in the morning, there were would be more than one and the rods would be very visible.

‘This could very well be the ghost which everyone is talking about.

‘There have been a few different stories which have come from several people now and you start to think there must be something happening on the pier.

‘A lot of the recent sightings took place in November.’

Matthew and his classmates are now planning to head back to Clevedon to take more photographs around the town for an architecture section of his course.

He added: ‘I am not sure whether I will catch any more ghosts on camera, but I will certainly keep my eye out.’

How you can tell thats adidas i dont know..

In a shocking photo, taken by student Mark Custard, a picture of a ghostly figure standing about a bit on a pier in broad daylight could be evidence that ghosts don’t exist, eh, urm, what!

It’s the caretaker, it always is. Haven’t you seen that film, Scooby Doo?

News just in… Following Scooby Doo’s recent investigation we can now confirm it was in fact the Janitor. In a press conference, Student Matthew Hales explained to news reporters that ‘He would have gotten away with it too if it hadn’t been for those meddling kids’. In other news, reports of strange lights over the skies of London were later confirmed as planes on final approach to Heathrow Airport.

For Gods Sake, its a CHAV taking an early morning walk!!!!

I don’t understand some of the information in the article. It says the pier was locked and now due to open til 10 am. Then it says fishermen are allowed on the pier and often fish during the early morning hours. That’s confusing to me. So the figure could be a fisherman since they are allowed on the pier 24/7? Why are only fishermen allowed on the pier all hours but other people are not? Do the fishermen have keys to unlock the gate during non- public hours? Does anyone in the area have any more info that can clear this up for me?
