Unless you were living under a cat video last week you probably have seen the parody video “I’m Farming and I Grow It.” The video, by the Peterson Farm Brothers, is a parody of LMFAO’s “I’m Sexy and I Know It.”

In between working on the family’s farm, the three brothers-Greg, Nathan and Kendal- filmed the video with the help of their 11-year-old sister who operated the camera and made sure the boys were in the shot.
Their parody video was uploaded to YouTube on June 25. Three days later the video had broken the 1 million views mark propelled by social media and sites like The Huffington Post and Gawker. As of this writing the video has over 2 millions views after the brothers appeared on “Fox and Friends” last Friday.
Throughout it all the Peterson brothers have made a point of mentioning that their video is intended to promote agriculture and make us think about the people who grow our food. The comments under the video on YouTube and other sites are filled with farmers, young and older, expressing pride in the Peterson brothers.
“We really want agriculture to be promoted,” Nathan said on “Fox and Friends.” “We think a lot of people overlook it. Without agriculture, none of us would have clothing or food.”
You can find discussions about the impact of growing corn, feeding cows grain-based diets, and organic foods versus GMOs in the comments on YouTube. The brothers have struck an agvocating goldmine that is more palatable than the “thank a farmer” finger-wagging so many employ.
They’re using popular culture and a medium the younger generation is familiar with to reach an audience that otherwise may not give where their food comes from a second thought.
The “I’m Farming and I Grow It” video isn’t the first farming-themed parody of LMFAO’s hit song.
Back in May, three Canadian friends with dreams of musical stardom uploaded “From Sussex and I Know It.” The fist-pumping, udder-jiggling anthem for small town farmers had over 400,000 views before the Peterson brothers came on the scene and catapulted to Internet celebrities in the span of a week.

I contacted the guys behind the video, who are now going by their band name Take The Chance, over the weekend to talk to them about their video, but didn’t receive a reply as of this posting.
Considering America’s current love affair with the Peterson brothers I don’t think Take The Chance will be realizing their dream of appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” any time soon, but it’s refreshing to see young people display their agriculture credentials in an era where we make stars of those with far less talent and work ethic.
In the comments of their video, Take The Chance is currently being accused of copying the Peterson brothers even though their parody was recorded and uploaded to YouTube first. Maybe Ellen can host a battle of the “I’m Sexy and I Know It” parodies.
It’s like the ‘90s boy band wars all over again. Except this time it involves agriculture,and a message young people need to hear. And that’s pretty cool.
