The Big Issue celebrates its 400th edition

Real estate auctioneers across the country are taking to the streets to sell magazines in celebration of The Big Issue’s 400th edition.

Fifteen years after its launch in Australia, the 400th edition of the fortnightly magazine, which is sold by people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, disability and long-term unemployment, will go on sale on Friday.

To mark the occasion, 30 Ray White auctioneers will team up with The Big Issue sellers across the country to see who can sell the most copies in 40 minutes.

The Big Issue CEO, Steven Persson, said the co-ordinated sales effort would help spread the word about the magazine.

“Our 400th edition is a major milestone and, with the help of some of Australia’s leading auctioneers, we want to create some noise on the streets to spread the word about who we are and what we do,” Mr Persson said.

“The magazine provides some of Australia’s most disadvantaged people with the opportunity to earn an income.

“It empowers them by giving them a hand up, not a hand out.”
