The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said on Thursday that the state’s remaining supply of pentobarbital would expire in September.
State officials are now looking for alternatives to the lethal drug for the remaining executions scheduled this year.
“We will be unable to use our current supply of pentobarbital after it expires,” department spokesman Jason Clark said. “We are exploring all options at this time.”
Two executions are scheduled for September and three others are scheduled for October and November. Texas has executed 11 people so far this year.
Texas is known as the most active death penalty state in the US. According to a report by Amnesty International, Texas carried out over one third of all lethal injections in the US in 2012.
Texas has also executed more than 500 prisoners since it resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.
Moreover, the state is responsible for nearly 40 percent of over 1,300 executions in the US since 1976 when the Supreme Court lifted a ban on the practice.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the racial ratio of the victims of the death penalty in the US has been striking since the revival of the practice in 1976, with the penalty being disproportionately imposed on ethnic minorities.
According to statistics released by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, 8 of the 11 executed prisoners in Texas this year have been African-Americans.
