Texas passes student firearms bills

The 12 firearms bills received preliminary approval on Saturday, a day known as “gun day.” They will most likely move to the Senate.

The series of bills are aimed at softening the country’s already arms-friendly gun laws.

Under these bills, college students will be allowed to carry guns in classrooms. The state will also reportedly be exempt from any future federal ban on assault rifles, high-capacity magazines or universal background checks.

According to the Houston Chronicle, college or university faculty and staff with concealed handgun licenses will also be allowed to bring guns into classrooms.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are killed in firearm-related incidents across the United States.

On May 1, a 5-year-old boy shot and killed his 2-year-old sister in the US state of Kentucky.

Since the massacre of 20 school children and six educators in Connecticut last year, President Barack Obama has been pushing for tougher federal gun laws.

It is estimated that there are as many as 300 million guns in the country. The year 2012 was a record setting year for gun sales in the US.
