Islamist rebels flee Syria for Turkey amid Syrian Army’s recent success in northern Latakia

It has been almost three months since the Russian Air Force began their massive aerial campaign inside Syria, but as a result of their participation in this Syrian Conflict, the Islamist rebel forces are now on the run in the northern part of the country as the Syrian Arab Army and their allies advance at several fronts.

Perhaps the Syrian Arab Army’s most impressive offensive is currently taking place in the Latakia Governorate’s northeastern countryside, where they have captured over 65 sites in just over two months time at the strategic mountains of Jabal Al-Akrad (Kurdish Mountains) and Jabal Al-Turkmen (Turkmen Mountains).

Over the last 48 hours inside the Latakia Governorate’s northern countryside that borders Turkey, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard – in coordination with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Latakia City, and the Syrian Resistance – have imposed control over several border points after a series of intense firefights with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA). As a result of these recent advances made by the Syrian Armed Forces in northern Latakia, the Islamist rebels were reportedly seen fleeing across the Syrian border to Turkey in order to evade the Russian Air Force’s powerful airstrikes and the SAA’s relentless artillery. This report was confirmed by a military source currently operating near the predominately Armenian town of Kassab – he also added that the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade is nearing the rebel stronghold of Rabiy’ah; if captured, the Islamists will have lost their second most important town in northern Latakia.
