Bahram Ghasemi, Iran’s Foreing Ministry Spokesman, expressed his deep sympathies and condolences to the families of martyrs and victims who lost their lives or became wounded during an attack on the Sayyid Mohammed shrine in Balad 70 kilometers north of Baghdad, which involved suicide bombers and gun and mortar fire.
While describing terrorist attacks on holy religious sites and shrines a shameful act, the Iranian diplomat once again highlighted the need for international unity for an effective fight against Takfiri terrorism and the deranged behavior of terrorist groups.
The ISIL terrorist group carried out a suicide attack on the Shia Sayyid Mohammed shrine early Friday, as worshippers were marking the Eid al-Fitr festival, celebrating the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. At least 30 people were killed and 50 others injured during the attack.
The incident comes just days after another ISIL-claimed attack on Sunday which targeted a bustling Baghdad street packed with shoppers and considered as the worst bombing in the country since the US-led invasion of 2003. According to the health ministry, the death toll from Sunday’s suicide bombing in Baghdad has been raised to 292.
