Terrorist attacks claim 60 lives in Iraq

Baghdad suffered the largest number of mortalities on Thursday in nearly 10 bomb explosions that ripped through the capital city during the rush hour and other attacks that hit police patrols, commuters and crowds in shopping areas.

At least 32 people were killed in Baghdad’s attacks, including a car bomb that detonated near a restaurant in the northern Kadhimiya district, which killed six people and wounded 18 more.

In the biggest attack outside the capital, a car bomb killed seven people and wounded 33 in the town of Balad, north of Baghdad.

The rest of the victims were killed in separate attacks mostly on Shia Muslims and police forces across the country, from Mosul in the north to Hilla, south of Baghdad.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry blamed al-Qaeda and affiliated armed groups for the attacks, condemning the violence as part of the enemy attempts to raise concerns on the country’s security situation.

The deadly violence comes weeks before an Arab League summit scheduled to be held in Iraq at the end of March.

“The attacks aimed to spark sectarian strife among the Iraqi people, and to prevent the Arab League meeting from being held,” Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi said.
