nsnbc : A terror bomb ripped through Istanbul’s Sultanahmet square close to the world-famous Haga Sofia and Blue Mosque. German tourists are among those killed by the blast stated local reporters. Turkish security services claimed body parts of the attacker identified him as Syrian. It is at this point in time uncertain whether reports that the self-proclaimed Islamic State is responsible for the attack are correct.
The blast that ripped through Sultanahmet square Tuesday morning killed ten and injured another fifteen report local medical sources. The blast occurred in one of the areas of Turkey’s most populous city that is most frequented by tourists.
Istanbul security services claimed that they had succeeded at identifying the bomber as a Syrian by his body parts. The final identification will have to be made by a coroner.
A cohort of media report that the self-proclaimed Islamic State was responsible for the attack. Even though it is possibly correct, this claim could thus far not be independently verified.
Turkey’s role with regard to the so-called Islamic Sate a.k.a ISIS, ISIL or Daesh is complex. NATO member Turkey is one of the primary supporters of Daesh.
Turkey has been widely criticized for its permeable border that allows weapons, fighters, and logistic supplies for Daesh into Syria while importing stolen and smuggled oil from Daesh. Oil that in part is being “laundered” via the predominantly Kurdish northern Iraq.
Washington and several NATO members have become increasingly “disgruntled” about Turkey’s role with regard to the Kurdish situation and Turkish business with Daesh, even though several analysts consider much of the criticism directed against Turkey as disingenuous.
Meanwhile, Turkey has launched an offensive against the Turkish Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that is supporting Syrian YPG units in their fight against Daesh. It is noteworthy that the PKK and YPG enjoy Moscow’s “sympathy”.
The bombing resulted in a series of political statements by, among others, Turkey’s President R. Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Considering the evidence or lack thereof at the present time, such comments are predominantly of political rather than of investigative and informative value.
Confronted with a de-facto civil war against the PKK that has claimed the lives of numerous non-combatant Kurdish civilians, President Erdogan used the opportunity to say that:
“This incident has once again showed that as a nation we should act as one heart, one body in the fight against terror. Turkey’s determined and principled stance in the fight against terrorism will continue to the end.” (emphasis added)
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, confronted with the fact that Germans may be among the injured and dead was careful with attributing responsibility, saying: “International terrorism has shown its ugly face. … We need to act decisively against it.” German authorities warned tourists from avoiding crowded places in Turkey.
The German Foreign Intelligence Service BND has a well-established presence in Turkey and the risk assessment can, even without specific attribution of guilt been taken serious. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier noted that it by now was safe to assume that Germans were among the dead.
The bombing was also condemned by Britain’s Ambassador to Turkey, Richard Moore, who conveyed his condolences via “Twitter” and by other foreign dignitaries and diplomats. More reports will follow as verifiable evidence and additional reports become available.
