Tenth of British women raped: Survey

The research revealed that over a third of respondents had been sexually assaulted and over four in five of the victims did not report the attack to police due to concerns about embarrassment, shame, and low conviction rates.

Furthermore, it found that almost three-quarters of females responding to the poll feel the media is unsympathetic to women who report rape.

A parenting website has launched We Believe You campaign backed by Rape Crisis, Barnardo’s and the End Violence Against Women coalition to support sex attack victims.

“It is shocking and unacceptable that this number of women have been raped and sexually assaulted. But the stand-out fact is that so few would report it to officials or even to loved ones, because of the general perception society is unsympathetic,” said Justine Roberts, co-founder of Mumsnet.

“Things are made worse by the feeling among many women that they can’t talk about these crimes for fear of being treated unsympathetically, denying them access to practical and emotional support when they need it most.

Last week, it was revealed that funding from local authorities to organisations working with domestic violence and sexual abuse victims fell from £7.8m in 2010-11 to £5.4m in 2012 as part of the coalition government’s plans to cut the annual bill by £350m.
