‘Tensions reducing in Tehran-Baku ties’

Hasanov told reporters in the western Azeri city of Ganja on Saturday that tension between Iran and Azerbaijan is being resolved due to the will of the Azeri and Iranian authorities.

“As it is known, circles close to the West, including some anti-Azerbaijani and anti-Iranian circles, played an important role in exacerbating the recent tensions,” he noted.

The senior Azerbaijani official added that strained relations between Iran and Azerbaijan are in the “interests of some official and unofficial geopolitical circles.”

“An Iranian delegation visiting Azerbaijan at a ministerial level and the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Iran demonstrates Tehran does not want tensions to continue in the two countries’ relations,” Hasanov said.

During a meeting with Aliyev in the Azeri capital of Baku on July 12, Iran’s Minister of Education Hamid-Reza Haji-Babaei extended President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to the Azeri chief executive to participate in the forthcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran.

Earlier in the day, the Iranian minister held talks with Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov and stressed the importance of bolstering relations with Baku in all fields.
